RMC internship

The experience of Krutika, after just completing her internship at RMC

RMC has a wide range of ways to get involved, gain experience and develop. We work with local organisations, universities and more to reach the community to offer these opportunities and we are always so delighted when someone comes on board, grows and also makes a big impact to those we work with during their time.

Krutika was one such person who recently completed an internship in our Birmingham centre. On finished, she wrote the following:

As I come to the end of my internship journey with RMC: THE REFUGEE AND MIGRANT CENTRE, I can’t help but reflect on the profound impact this experience has had on my future. Being my first work experience, I consider myself truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with such a wonderful organisation.

As a migrant and international student myself, I deeply relate to the journey of individuals living in a foreign country and striving to grow. Working as a project intern with RMC on the “LAASLO- Move On” project, which supports asylum seekers recently granted permission to stay in the UK, has been an incredibly fulfilling experience providing valuable advice on benefits, housing, employment, immigration, health, and well-being, helping those in need during their transition. Throughout this internship, I gained valuable knowledge of immigration law and the intricacies of migrant businesses. However, the most significant lesson I learned was empathy and a greater appreciation for life. Serving people directly impacted by war in countries like Syria, Sudan, Afghanistan, and many others opened my eyes to the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

The best part of my internship was undoubtedly the people I had the privilege to work with. Our team was a diverse mix of individuals from law, social work, and business backgrounds, united in a shared goal of making a positive difference in society. There was no hierarchical pressure, and support was abundant. Every day brought a different journey, with unique cases, and my colleagues taught me the importance of resilience, patience, and teamwork.

I had the honour of meeting some incredible men and extraordinary women during this internship, and their stories will forever hold a special place in my heart. This experience has left an indelible impression on me, and I will cherish the memories and lessons gained for a lifetime.

Thank you, RMC: THE REFUGEE AND MIGRANT CENTRE, for providing me with this invaluable opportunity and support. I look forward to carrying these experiences and values with me as I continue to grow both personally and professionally.
