Zahra’s Story

Zahra, a survivor of domestic abuse, is rebuilding her life with the support of RMC. After receiving free, regulated, immigration support from our caseworkers, she can now look forward to a future where she and her daughter can live in peace.

"The support provided by RMC was really helpful and I am in a better place mentally because of it. The situation I was in had me stressed and fearful all the time, the support provided by RMC has given me hope that my daughter will be able to have a future here. I had no hope before or understanding of what support services are available. I am grateful for your service and can now live in peace."

Seeking safety and a new life

Zahra* moved to the West Midlands to protect herself and her daughter from harm after leaving an abusive relationship. She came seeking safety and a new life. She decided to stay with a member of her social circle but was asked to leave soon after arriving. Zahra’s visa included the No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) condition, meaning she was unable to access accommodation or financial support. This resulted, in Zahra and her daughter becoming homeless. Her social worker, on becoming aware of the situation, referred her to RMC for support.

Building stability

RMC provided Zahra with targeted support, successfully applying for the Migrant Victim of Domestic Violence Concession (MVDAC) which gave Zahra and her daughter temporary access to welfare benefits and the right to housing support. This ensured they could meet their living needs and avoid homelessness.

The outcome

Zahra has since obtained safe accommodation for herself and her daughter. She continues to work with our caseworkers on indefinite leave to remain applications for herself and her daughter. If successful, this will allow her them to continue to live safely and independently from their abuser, building independent lives in the West Midlands.
