Paul’s Journey to Stability and Hope

Paul is a Hongkonger and came to the UK on a British National Overseas (BNO) visa. Back in his home country, he worked as an administrator in local government. After arriving in Birmingham, Paul focused on settling his child into their new life.

Employment struggles

Despite submitting more than 30 job applications for roles such as postman, warehouse operative, and hospitality worker, Paul received no responses from employers or recruitment agencies. His limited confidence in English and lack of UK work experience became major barriers to securing employment. Eventually, he was offered a zero-hour contract as a waiter at a Chinese restaurant. The job provided low pay and unstable conditions, and over time, his working hours dwindled until his contract was terminated.

With little savings, Paul found himself in severe financial hardship, struggling to support his son. This period of instability led to feelings of hopelessness and depression. However, despite these challenges, Paul remained committed to improving his English skills and continued attending ESOL classes at the Refugee and Migrant Centre (RMC). Through his teacher, he learned about the dedicated Hongkonger employment support services available at the centre.

Personalised Employment Support and Career Guidance

In his first meeting with an RMC employment adviser, Paul shared his work history, skills, and aspirations for the future. Recognising his potential, the adviser connected him with a National Careers Service resident adviser, who helped him restructure his CV to make it more appealing to UK employers.

During a discussion with his adviser, Paul mentioned that he was considering purchasing a car but had ultimately decided against it as he was worried about spending more of his savings. The adviser encouraged him to reconsider, highlighting how having a vehicle would significantly improve his job prospects by allowing him to travel independently. With the help of a friend’s connection, Paul found a suitable car at an affordable price, greatly expanding his job search opportunities.

A New Beginning: Pathway to Employment

In January, Paul attended a hospitality seminar hosted by the project in partnership with Hilton Hotel, where he gained valuable insights into the industry and potential career opportunities. Shortly afterward, he participated in a Hilton recruitment seminar and successfully passed an initial screening interview. His determination and preparation led to a second interview, where he secured a job offer for 16 hours per week.

This employment opportunity was a turning point in Paul’s life. Not only did he regain a stable income, but he also restored his confidence and hope. The security of employment allowed him to plan ahead, support his child, and look forward to a brighter future in the UK.

Impact of the Organisation’s Work

Paul’s story is a testament to the transformative impact of tailored employment support. Through personalised career guidance, practical interventions, and strategic partnerships with employers, the Refugee and Migrant Centre helped Paul overcome significant employment barriers, highlighting the crucial role of targeted support services in enabling individuals like Paul to rebuild their lives.
