Rukhsana’s story: How ESOL can transform lives

Through RMC's ESOL classes, Rukhsana has gained independence, connected with her community, and taken control of her life in the UK.

Arriving in the UK

Rukhsana arrived in the UK in 2005 on a spouse visa, hopeful about building a new life. Like many newcomers, she wanted to explore, learn, and settle in and she quickly realised that language was a major barrier. Without English, everyday tasks became challenging.

She struggled to communicate, making simple activities like grocery shopping or registering with a GP feel overwhelming. Relying on others for basic chores left her feeling dependent, lacking confidence, and increasingly stressed.

This loss of independence affected her wellbeing and limited her ability to fully participate in life in the UK.

Creating connections

After a few years of living in the UK, Rukhsana found that learning English on her own was extremely challenging. With no one to practise with and few opportunities to engage in conversation, her progress was slow and often frustrating. Then, one day, someone told her about ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, and that conversation became a turning point in her language learning journey.

She soon joined an ESOL class run by the Refugee and Migrant Centre in Walsall. At first, her English was very basic, and expressing her thoughts was difficult, making it hard to build relationships or expand her social circle. But when she stepped into the RMC classroom, everything changed.

The teachers guided her patiently, adapted lessons to her needs, and created a supportive space where she could finally learn, practise, and grow.

Opening the door to independence

Rukhsana, driven by a deep desire to become independent, embraced classes with enthusiasm and willingness to learn more. She made it her mission to improve her English for a better future. “I love learning,” she stated with joy, “And I try to use what I learn in my daily life.”

Her efforts soon started to pay off. One of her proudest achievements was passing the theory test for her driving licence (DL) which was a milestone that opened the door to a new level of independence. For the first time, she could travel on her own and visit different places freely, without relying on others.

With encouragement and practical support from her tutors, Rukhsana gradually gained the skills and confidence to take on tasks she once found daunting. She felt more productive, more capable, and above all, more in control of her life. Not only did she complete the ESOL course, but she also went on to enrol in a more advanced class to further develop her skills.

“Now I don’t have to wait for someone to accompany me to the grocery store.”

Today, Rukhsana can do her grocery shopping and run daily errands without needing help. In her own words she says: “Now I don’t have to wait for someone to accompany me to the grocery store.

Rukhsana’s journey shows not only the life-changing impact of ESOL but also the vital role ESOL tutors play in helping learners gain independence, confidence, and the skills to become active members of their community.
