RMC’s first Iftar event

On Friday, 21 March 2025, the Refugee and Migrant Centre (RMC) brought the community to life with an Iftar and Networking Evening where colleagues, partners, and community members came together to share a meal, build meaningful connections, and celebrate the essence of Ramadan through togetherness and care.

The event was held at RMC’s Birmingham centre and welcomed colleagues, supporters, partners, and community members. The atmosphere was warm and open, offering an opportunity to share a meal, connect, learn from one another, and engage with the stories and efforts that shape the organisation’s daily work.

The evening began with a welcome from Heena, our Fundraising Officer, followed by a short reflection from Abbas Baig, a member of RMC’s Senior Leadership Team, alongside Sandra Tittle, Operations Manager. They shared RMC’s work and mission, showcasing the organisation’s commitment to building a society where newcomers feel welcome, valued, and able to live dignified lives.

Inspiring voices

The evening continued with an awe-inspiring story shared by Mirza, one of RMC’s advisors, who spoke about his personal journey and experiences of starting life anew in the UK. His words reminded many in the room of the daily realities faced by people seeking support, and how community-led work can make a profound difference in building confidence and stability. Mirza’s story gently opened a space for others to share their own stories shaped by resilience and quiet strength.

Guest speakers then offered further insight and inspiration. Hamza Mohammed, CEO of the International Relief Foundation, shared reflections from his work supporting vulnerable communities and highlighted the impact of donations on collective wellbeing. His talk emphasised the importance of local leadership and advocacy, and the strength found in people helping one another.

Next, Dr. Alija Avdukic, Professor of Political Economy and Islamic Finance at the University of Dundee, guided the audience through an intellectually engaging discussion. He spoke about his research into refugee experiences in Scotland and shared insights into the broader social and economic challenges affecting displaced communities. Dr. Avdukic also touched on global migration patterns and stressed the importance of thoughtful and informed responses to harness the potential of migration.

The evening included space for questions and reflections from attendees. A lively round of conversation followed, where diverse perspectives met, sparked ideas, and helped shape pathways for future engagement.

Breaking the fast

As the sun set, the call to prayer signalled the start of iftar, the time to break the fast. Sharing a meal and sitting side by side helped everyone feel more connected.

Spaces were made available for prayer, and the atmosphere of warmth and togetherness lingered throughout the evening. As the event came to a close, the Iftar and Networking Evening brought people together through shared conversations and meaningful connection.

It created a welcoming space where attendees could meet, reflect, and support one another. Funds raised will help families facing hardship by providing practical support. The event also showcased RMC’s ongoing commitment to building inclusive spaces where people can connect and grow together.
