Ola's Story - A case of a survivor of trafficking seeking safety

A young woman, trafficked into the UK as a child by people she trusted, is now on the path to safety and independence thanks to trauma-informed, multi-agency support from RMC.

Written by: RMC’s Safeguarding Team

Upon arrival, she was forced into a marriage where she gave birth to two children, all before reaching adulthood. Despite support from adult social services, she faced significant barriers to rebuilding her life: no identification, unclear immigration status, and deep trauma from her past.

When she was referred to the Refugee and Migrant Centre (RMC), she had no documents and limited understanding of her rights. Without ID, she was unable to apply for support, access essential services, or prove her residency in the UK.

RMC responded swiftly, providing whole person support tailored to her needs. Working closely with her social worker and a network of professionals, we ensured a joined-up, compassionate response that acknowledged her trauma and complex situation.

Securing Her Immigration Status

RMC supported her to apply for leave to remain, assisting to gather evidence of her long-term residence and vulnerabilities. We liaised with relevant authorities, helped collect the necessary documentation, and kept her informed and reassured throughout the process.

Recognition as a Survivor of Trafficking

Alongside this, we provided additional information to strengthen her referral to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), ensuring her experiences were properly understood and that she could access the protection and services available to victims of modern slavery.

RMC maintained regular contact with the Home Office, adult services, and legal partners, advocating for her rights and ensuring her voice was heard at every stage.

As a result of this coordinated effort, she was granted status, securing her right to remain in the UK. With official identification, she has greater independence and can access the services she and her children need. Her NRM case is still under review and may lead to further recognition and long-term support.

This young woman’s journey is a powerful example of how early intervention, specialist advice, and partnership working can help survivors of trafficking move forward to live happy, independent lives in safety.
