Muqadsa’s Story of Volunteering at RMC

Muqadsa joined the Refugee and Migrant Centre with a strong sense of purpose and a desire to make a meaningful difference. As a law student with a growing interest in immigration, she saw volunteering as a way to turn her empathy into action.

Though still early in her journey, her dedication, and commitment to learning have already made her a valued part of the team. With each step, Muqadsa is gaining skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those rebuilding their lives in the UK.

Muqadsa is one of our advisor volunteers, she is currently in the early stages of shadowing advisors at RMC. Having only recently started; she is undergoing training before engaging with clients and additional responsibilities independently. So far, she has contributed by offering language support and assisting with the completion of appointment forms.

Learning lessons

From her experience at RMC, Muqadsa states she has learned the importance of patience and cultural sensitivity. These lessons have not only enhanced her communication in everyday life but have also boosted her confidence when interacting with others. Volunteering at the RMC has significantly strengthened Muqadsa’s communication and interpersonal skills. Additionally, she has developed improved time management abilities, skills that are invaluable in any professional environment, particularly when working collaboratively and adapting to different roles.

“My motivation to volunteer at the RMC comes from the belief that migration is not only a legal process but also an emotional journey, which many individuals struggle with. Additionally, there are many steps after migrating to the UK where people need support, especially when they are in vulnerable situations. It is an opportunity to help someone. Even small support can change lives for the better. Being a law student requires me to read beyond my course content. When focusing on immigration law, I began to see the struggles that people go through. It made me feel truly empathetic, and I wanted to know how I could help.”

Volunteering at the RMC was a way to align this empathy with action, while also gaining insights and skills that would enhance both her personal development and professional growth.

Memorable moments

Her most memorable moment at RMC so far occurred while shadowing caseworkers and witnessing the positive, effective communication with clients. Observing how advice on housing issues or application queries brought visible relief and happiness to the beneficiaries was especially impactful.

Muqadsa shares that her experience at the RMC has been rewarding and very positive, she stays in regular communication with her mentor and the Volunteer and Training Manager on how her volunteering can be even more meaningful.
