Mohammed first visited RMC to enquire about support in finding a job in November 2019 after getting his right to work in the UK.
Background
Having arrived in the UK in 2018 as an asylum seeker, RMC had supported Mohammed with getting a settled immigration status and right to work, and Mohammed had also been improving his English by attending English classes at College.
What struck me at the time was his clarity of purpose and strong intent. He was already at college improving his English and wanted to complement this with improving his employability prospects.

Intervention
Mohammed was registered onto RMC’s Bridges programme, which supports people to build employability skills to be able to secure work. With his Job coach, James, they created a CV and several online job search accounts.
Mohammed attended every session with me and quickly improved his confidence, skill and knowledge in understanding job adverts and using websites such as Indeed to apply for vacancies. Fortunately, he also formed a very good habit of checking his emails and being self-organised.
With the confidence that Mohammed was gaining from his ESOL learning and the employability sessions, he decided to invest in a laptop. An investment that would prove very fruitful.
As part of the building Mohammed’s confidence, he broadened his horizons by joining a gym, something he enjoys and feels comfortable doing. At the gym he saw other refugees from Sudan and started to make friends with new people who shared his passion. This did wonders for developing his optimism and feeling of being part of the community.
Outcome
When the coronavirus crisis broke out, which meant the suspension of college ESOL, Mohammed decided to focus even more intently on work. He prioritised an Amazon application and Mohammed was successful. He was supported to ensure that he had the ICT to attend the online interviews and induction.
Mohammed has now been in work since mid-May and is now talking about passing his driving test and buying a car.
